Characters

Jade

Our leading lady. A bit of a shy gal who is very uncomfortable in her own skin. Best friends with Vicky.

Vicky

The opposite of Jade. Confident, happy and loving life.

Ghost Vicky

Probably a figment of Jade’s imagination, resulting from her grief and guilt over Vicky’s death (spoiler). She makes Jade’s life very difficult and is not the nicest.

Jade's Parents

The Ma seems to wish she had a more confident daughter, and isn’t the happiest in her marriage or with her set up in general. The Dad seems oblivious to most of what’s happening around him and has a weird crush on Vicky.

Mrs. Cambridge

Sound teacher who wants to help Jade get a bitta counselling.

Mrs. Wainright

A priest/vicar but also a grief counsellor. Helps Jade a lot.

Sam

A very nice boy who befriends Jade and is understanding of her grief.

Synopsis

  • Jade and Vicky are walking home from school one day. Jade wants to start Drama Club which Vicky gives her a bit of stick over. We get a sense it’s maybe not the nicest friendship, and not one that makes Jade feel like the most confident gal in the world. They have an argument and Vicky runs out into the road, and is hit by a car.
  • Jade goes with Vicky to hospital, but unfortunately Vicky doesn’t survive. Jade is at a complete loss, she doesn’t know who she is without her best friend and feels like the incident was all her fault.
  • Jade is haunted by the ghost of Vicky, a meaner version of living Vicky who feeds into Jade’s guilt and torments her when she tries to make new friends or move on.
  • Sam, one of their classmates who gets a bit of stick for his weight and is the class clown, clearly wants to support Jade and is very understanding of her grief, even when she’s not the nicest to him. He’s a very kind lil fella.
  • Jade is in a downward spiral of grief, and can’t talk to anyone about what she’s going through. Mrs Cambridge calls round to the gaff and encourages her parents to organise some counselling for Jade, they’re not into the idea. Side note – Jade’s Ma is having an affair and doesn’t try to hide from Jade the fact she’s not that happy with the life they have, or with the way Jade’s coping with her grief. She’d like her to be quote unquote normal.
  • Finally Jade starts talking to Mrs Wainright, who helps her through her grief. But Vicky’s ghost is still around a good bit, acting out when people are nice to Jade, encouraging her to be on her own and not talk to anyone or move on.
  • The book ends with the inquest into Vicky’s death, where Jade is forced to revisit what happened in the moments before Vicky died. Ghost Vicky lets her know it wasn’t her fault, and they make up. Ghost Vicky is gone, and Jade can start to move on.
