Characters

Meursault

The main character. An indifferent man who doesn't have any strong feelings about anything.

Meursault's Mother

The book begins with her death. She had been living in a home in the countryside in the last years of her life, Meursault hadn't seen her in a while.

Marie

Meursault's girlfriend. To be fair, I doubt they every actually made it official, let's just call her a woman Meursault was having sex with. He's not hugely interested in her, which is kind of a theme in his life as you'll see.

Raymond

Meursault's friend. He believes his mistress is having an affair.

"The Arab"

Brother of Raymond's mistress. He's referred to only as "The Arab" throughout the book, we never learn his name.

Synopsis

  • The book begins with Meursault travelling to the countryside for his Mother's funeral. He doesn't seem particularly upset by her death.
  • Meursault returns to work and becomes reacquainted with a former colleague, Marie. They go swimming, go to the cinema and have sex.
  • Then Meursault meets up with his friend Raymond, who believes his mistress is having an affair. Raymond asks Meursault to write his mistress a letter asking her to come over so he can have sex with her and then spit in her face and beat her. Meursault agrees.
  • The letter works, the mistress comes over, and Raymond beats her. Her brother, referred to only as "The Arab", seeks revenge for this.
  • Meursault and Raymond spend the weekend at a friends beach house. The mistresses brother and a friend follow them there, as they want to confront Raymond. Raymond and the brother get into a fight, where Raymond is is stabbed but not seriously injured. Later that day, Meursault and Raymond seek out the Arab men again, and Meursault fatally shoots the mistresses brother.
  • Meursault is imprisoned and awaits trial. Due to his general indifference in life, once he gets over the fact he can't have sex with Marie he doesn't really mind prison.
  • During the trial, the main issue that's brought up is that Meursault wasn't upset at his Mother's funeral. Meursault is found guilty and sentenced to death.
  • In the end, Meursault is content in his indifference and awaits his execution.
